ABBAYE DE MAILLEZAIS

MAILLEZAIS

Built in 1003 on an island in the Golfe des Pictons (Gulf of Pictons), this Benedictine abbey played host to men of letters and artists, including François Rabelais and Agrippa d’Aubigné.

On the esplanade, the imposing and well-preserved remains of the cathedral, kitchen, refectory, pantry and salt store can be seen.
May-June: “Festival des Voûtes célestes” (Festival of Heaven) - sacred music in the Southern Vendée.
July-August: “Les Compagnons Bâtisseurs” (The Journeyman Builders) – tours looking at the life of builders in the Middle Ages and the symbolism of religious art.
December: Christmas activities.
