ABBAYE DE NIEUL SUR L’AUTISE

NIEUL SUR L’AUTISE

Founded in 1068, the Abbey of Nieul was granted royal status by Eleanor of Aquitaine, then queen of France.

The Abbey remains one of the few monastic complexes in the Poitou region that still has its three elements of church, cloister and monastic buildings virtually intact. Use of scenography, lighting effects and new technologies such as 3D virtual tours and optical theatre enhance the visitor experience.
- May-June: “Festival des Voûtes célestes” (Festival of Heaven) - sacred music in the Southern Vendée.
- July-August: free tours in period costume for 5-9 year olds. “Eleanor’s ballad”: musical events every Friday in July and August.
- December: Christmas activities.
