CHATEAU DE POUZAUGES

POUZAUGES

Standing high on a hill in the Vendée’s Haut Bocage country, the Château de Pouzauges boasts one of the oldest and best preserved stone keeps in the Poitou region.

Dating back to the 12th century, the fortress has twelve towers. In the 15th century, the castle belonged to Catherine de Thouars, wife of Gilles de Rais, who made it her main residence.
Guided tours of the keep are available throughout July and August.
On Thursdays in July and August, a programme of torchlit night-time tours offers a picturesque introduction to the medieval town.
Additional attractions: new treasure hunt for 6-12 year olds and medieval workshops.
