CHÂTEAU DES ESSARTS

LES ESSARTS

With a history dating back 2000 years to Roman times, from the castral mound and imposing 12th century Saracen tower, through 13th and 16th century constructions to the “new” 19th century castle, the Château des Essarts lies in landscaped parkland designed by the Bühler brothers.

Owned by some of the country’s noblest families, many important characters from history have visited or stayed within its walls, including Charles VII, Henri IV and Napoléon, as well as the Guillery brothers, notorious bandits of the song. The site was a theatre of battle during the Wars of Religion and the War in the Vendée.
As well as the castle itself, visitors can enjoy exploring the 25 hectares of parkland outside its walls.
