MUSEE DU CHATEAU DE NOIRMOUTIER

NOIRMOUTIER EN L’ILE

This 12th century medieval castle, one of the best-preserved in the Vendée, has weathered the centuries well and managed to retain all its charm.

The keep and ramparts, a symbol of seigneurial power and an impregnable fortress built to protect the inhabitants against invasion, also served as a prison during times of war.
Today the castle is home to a museum which showcases the island’s history, from prehistoric times, through the turmoil of the War in the Vendée, to the beginnings of tourism in the 19th century. The keep affords a wonderful panoramic view over the island and the Bay of Bourgneuf.
