On an island in the middle of the marshes sits a 12th century Benedictine abbey.
The Romanesque church, with its magnificent doorway, opens out onto an inner courtyard, complete with original well.
The monastic buildings and abbey church suffered damage during the Hundred Years War and Wars of Religion in the 14th and 16th centuries
respectively, but the abbey was restored in 1680 by members of the Camaldolese order, who remained until 1779.
Today, the former monastery boasts a number of interesting architectural remains, including the Benedictine monks’ dormitory, the kitchen and its bread oven, and the cellars.
