The abbey has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1946. A congregation of Benedictine monks has lived there since 1979.
Founded in 1130 by Benedictine monks, the fortified abbey was attacked during the Hundred Years' War (1372) and burnt down 3 times during the Wars of Religion (late 16th century). During the Revolution, the monastery buildings were sold as national property. La Grainetière Abbey was listed as a Historic Monument in 1946. Since 1979, a priory has been run by the Congrégation Notre-Dame d'Espérance, with the presence of around ten monks. Between 1963 and 2018, all the remains of the abbey were consolidated. The Association Immobilière de la Grainetière, which owns the abbey and is responsible for its restoration with the help of the Association des Amis de la Grainetière and the monastic community, has launched the 2030 GRAND PROJECT to restore the volumes destroyed over the centuries... to celebrate the abbey's 900th anniversary in style!
