A day trip to Yeu island on a bicycle
Destination "Ile d’Yeu" whether it’s setting out from Fromentine or Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, this french island is only 30 to 45 minutes from the Vendée on France’s West coast. Upon arrival at Port-Joinville it’s time to rent a bicycle, the best way to soak up the atmosphere of Yeu island.
During this bicycle trip, we will discover some of the “must-see” sites of Ile d’Yeu. Among the more well-known sites is the Vieux Chateau, classed as a historical monument in 1890, and the Grand Phare located to the north-west of the Island. Not forgetting the dolmens, witnesses of the prehistoric past of Yeu island or the Pointe des Corbeaux located at the southeastern end of the island.
Don’t forget to make a stop at le Port de la Meule, a picturesque little fishing port tucked neatly into the rugged coastline. Continuing on towards Saint Sauveur a lively island village, we come across its traditional white houses with their colourful shutters, its small shops and local market. Just perfect for taking a break and a wander.
There’s nothing like a picnic to recharge your batteries before setting off again. Why not stop on one of Ile d’Yeu’s beautiful beaches such as Les Sapins, les Sabias or les Fontaines for lunch? And why not opt for some of the local produce such as fish Rillettes from the Conserverie de l’île d’Yeu or even the famous prune tart from Mousnier pastry shop?
After this well-deserved break, the more motivated among you can get back on the road to meet one of the Yeu island’s inhabitants Emilie, who offers tours of her sheep farm where she cultivated aromatic plants and red fruits for permaculture. During the summer, families can try out various activities.
At the end of the day, it’s back to the nerve centre of Ile d’Yeu: Port Joinville, where we have an appointment with la Fabrique. Here we can discover local arts and crafts, before heading off to enjoy the traditional restaurants and bars such as the Escadrille bar. Sometimes seafaring songs can be heard from across the water.
