Fiefs Vendéen wine growers of Brem – a salty influence
The "Fiefs Vendéens" appellation of Brem covers 80 hectares and is made up of five distinctive coastal vineyards. It extends over the communities of Brem sur Mer, Brétignolles sur Mer, Ile d'Olonne, Olonne sur Mer and Vairé. Their location means that the sea air has a particular influence on the vines, producing dry white wines typified by a hint of iodine. Made from Grolleau Gris and Chenin low vines, these limpid and fresh wines also have a slight apple aroma. The Pinot Noir, Gamay and Cabernet grape varieties provide light rosés and sometimes very strong reds.
Many vineyards are family run estates, some even over 4 generations. Visits to the caves area are possible, their owners are only to happy to show you around and share their precious savoir-faire.
Domaine Saint Nicolas using biodynamie methods since 1993
Patrice Michon created the Domaine Saint Nicolas at Brem sur Mer in the 1960’s, and the family settled down in Ile d’Olonne at the end of the 1970’s. Starting out with practically nothing, among the 100 other wine growers of the town and 300 hectares of vines. Using biodynamie methods since 1993, today the vineyard covers 38 hectares, and is run by Thierry Michon and his son Antoine. They are the last wine growers in the town.
